I've been plugging the season along with Javy at C and have been wanting to snag someone off waivers to replace him. Napoli has caught my eye, but he only has 155 ABs this season. Is he starting everyday in Anaheim? Who else do they have catching there? Would I be able to rely on him to fill that spot?
I'm not making this about my roster, simply inquiring about Napoli's playing status.
Thanks for any info.
He's basically been an everyday player since his call-up in early May. Jose Molina is the Angel's back-up catcher, and Jeff Mathis is knocking on the door, but Napoli just took his opportunity and ran with it, bouncing above Mathis in the Depth Chart. I've had him since mid-June, when I traded away Ben Molina. And he's been a consistently good power option from the C position. Unless he gets traded (and from what he's done so far, I think Mathis may be out before Napoli is), he's definitely worth the roster spot. Drop Javy for him, no doubt.
Just noticed....his average is down to .196 for July, but he's still got 4 homers this month. The Angels have been struggling a little bit lately, but look for the entire lineup to wake back up and for Nap's RBI/AVG to rise back up.
He takes a lot of walks, so that's a good sign. He tends to got his hits in spurts so far, but he always take walks... And he can really mash. Not just cheap homeruns, but some monster shots.
He''s had a few "hit it where they are" hard hit line drives which can kill an average if you're looking at a small sample size.... To me the key is, besides the walks, even when he gets an out, they're often off of full counts.... It's his patience that makes me optimistic... To gt him out, you have to throw him stikes. He's not going to chase junk. Long term, that makes him a tough out... And because his reputation for having a good eye hasn't spread yet, frankly, he's had a few marginal called 3rd strikes that often won't get called once the umps know his rep as a good eye... A batter's rep can really make a difference on those close pitches.
depends.... if obp or walks are counted, his value jumps greatly. if it's just average, too soon to say. I think eventually yes, but when, I don't know.
