I've read that he's from LA and loves being on the west coast. As long as LA comes even close to what he wants (which I fully expect them to anyway) I think he signs with them.
I happen to like Zito so the thought of him being a Yankee repulses me. Zito's a laidback, free-spirit type whom I don't think would thrive in NY. They took the wild-haired, goateed (albeit drug-ingesting) Jason Giambi I liked and turned him into the clean-cut Yankee he is now. It'd be a shame to see that happen to Zito, personally.
Don't count out the Padres either. The Pads have plenty of money coming off the books this offseason and I imagine they would love to add Zito to Peavy and Young in the rotation. They will definitely be looking some offense, but I think they will be in the running for Zito as well. I don't think they will pay New York money, but if Zito gives them a home team discount, it would not suprise me to see him sign in Wr's land.

Yeah, Zito was a Don in high school -- attended Uni here in San Diego -- so I could see him signing in San Diego, although it would be at a discount, which I don't see a Boras client taking.

Well, Zito is from San Diego, so if he wanted to come home I'm sure the Padres would try to make it happen. He actually went to the same high school as Mark Prior, I'm not sure at the same time, but if they did that would have been nasty.

Yeah, I say Mets also. I doubt it will be for this year though. I predict Zito will be signed by the Mets as a FA for next year getting a big contract in the process.
the A's love to keep their expiring contracts and get the draft picks that are compensation at the end of the year. unless they can pry milledge or some young pitching from the dodgers or whoever, i doubt they'll trade him..... the statement that no GM in their right mind would trade for him is quite the stupid statement. there are teams who acquire half season rentals all the time just for the playoff push

This is exactly what I was about to say until I read your post. It happens every year. Owners have proven more than willing to spend the money (and even give away top minor leagers) if they think it will increase their world series chances.
Adding one more top-notch SP to the Mets would be brutal to the other NL teams and could give any AL team big problems in the WS.
However, I do agree that the A's would be crazy to deal Zito as long as they are in the AL West race.

Short of getting Scott Kazmir, the A's are holding onto Zito. Remember pre-season talk? Oakland was the hot pick for the world series. They aren't going to flush that for a few B+ prospects.
That being said... they could probably get quite a bit for him if they wanted.
I don't see them getting much for him. As everyone said he's planning on testing the FA waters next year, so it makes giving away the farm for him a very bad idea.
As for him going to the Yankees, i'd rather him not. None of the other big 3 are doing well after leaving the A's, makes me a tad worried about him.
