SAN FRANCISCO -- Federal prosecutors said they would not seek an indictment Thursday against Barry Bonds, but that a grand jury investigating the baseball star for perjury and tax evasion charges would continue its work.
"The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California is not seeking an indictment today in connection with the ongoing steroids-related investigation," Luke Macauley, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco, said in a statement.
"Much has been accomplished to date, and we will continue to move forward actively in this investigation -- including continuing to seek the truthful testimony of witnesses whose testimony the grand jury is entitled to hear," he said.
Members of the grand jury investigating Bonds arrived at the federal courthouse Thursday for what was expected to be their final day of work.
Mark Geragos, attorney for Bonds' personal trainer, told The Associated Press his client would be released later in the day from federal prison, where Greg Anderson was sent more than two weeks ago after he refused to testify to the grand jury.
The judge said Anderson was to be held until he agreed to testify against Bonds or the grand jury's term expired. With the grand jury apparently being extended beyond Thursday, it was unclear whether Anderson will still be released.

.. do you guys have any idea how easy it is to get a grand jury indictment? Its something like 1-10,000 when they say no. All you have to do is ask. So we have had two separate grand juries, multiple people lives ruined, reporters who stand to make millions, an IRS agent who couldn't make it as a baseball player, with an agenda .. and no indictment.
Imagine that.
Hell you don't even get to put on a defense. You just get drug thru the mud, and only half the grand jurors have to say yes .. but here we are, 3 years later .. and nothing. Not even tax evasion charges ..
I have been saying from the beginning ..
something is rotten here. Its a big time rotten stink too.
anybody know when they are going to toss those reporters in jail for refusing to testify?
This just reinforces what many of us have been saying all along: Despite whether or not Bonds actually did it, there is no evidence, and the witch-hunt that they are on will prove fruitless.
Oh, there is evidence: 295lbs of it. Greg Anderson. It just won't talk. The Feds underestimate his resolve.
The government may be doing what all the PR/Spin money in the world could never accomplish: turn Bonds into a relatively sympathetic, matyred figure. They certainly risk that with another misstep.
As the saying goes, a Grand Jury will indict a ham sandwich. If they can't even indict him, their case has to be extraordinarily thin.
wrv: The reporters were facing possible jail time in a totally different case. That was the question of who leaked the grand jury testimony, not the Bonds indictment, and like I said before: if the reporters go to jail, it will only be for doing the right thing (refusing to give up their sources).
Also, I don't know about making millions. The world of sports journalism isn't really that lucrative, no matter what story you're covering.
As for the actual issue at hand, I think it is telling that they were unable to get an indictment. That's probably partially due to the fact that Anderson refused to testify; for all we know, they're just delaying the indictment to put more pressure on Anderson.
It's important to note that the jury didn't turn them down for an indictment--the prosecutors didn't even ask for one. So this isn't really a case of the prosecution failing, it just means they're taking their time with it.
So yes, there's a Bonds witch-hunt going on, but this particular delay doesn't have much to do with it.

thats because this isnt news.
"We are not finished," U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan said. "We have postponed the decision [to indict] for another day in light of some recent developments."
...
"We will continue to move forward actively in this investigation -- including continuing to seek the truthful testimony of witnesses whose testimony the grand jury is entitled to hear," said Luke Macaulay, a spokesman for Ryan.
how is a postponement news? what are we supposed to be discussing? nothing has happened between all those other bonds threads and now. the same things are true...anderson is the key to nailing bonds and anderson wont talk.
