Laird in Texas

Postby Philliebuster » Fri Jul 14, 2006 3:35 pm

Anyone familiar with the situation know if there is a potential that Laird sees more playing time at C. He appears to be legit defensively and his offensive #'s to date are quite impressive as well.

His minor league #'s are quite impressive as well 280 AB's, 17 Hr's, 300+ average.

Any Texas homers have any insight?

he SHOULD be the starting catcher for the rangers. he's very good defensively and offensively, and can be a sb threat.
but barajas is the starter and laird wont usually get more than 1 start per series.

next season should be his year to be the starting catcher.

I personally believe the Rangers are a better team with Laird in the line-up and if it wasnt for an injury a couple of years back that opened the door for Rod Barajas he would be the starting catcher. He should regain that job next year but unless Barajas just goes into a huge funk this year I dont see Laird over taking him for the starting job this season, which is a shame.

Last time I read about the TEX situation, I believe they were starting Laird vs LHP. Now sure if that's changed. If anyone has any new news then, by all means, let us.

When Varitek has a day off or sitting bc of Wakefield, I'm always checking if TEX is playing a LHP so that I can add Laird.

I've seen it stated by the Tex GM that he considers Laird to be the catcher of the future for the Rangers, not Barajas.
