That'd be more of a case in which he would get in, but not should get in.

That is very true and I guess the closest example to that is Jeter. While his avg to below avg defense and stats aren't THAT impressive, all the winning on a big stage would get him in (but it probably shouldn't). Once he hits 3000, I think he is a lock.
