BP: Manny has torn meniscus

I won’t be seeing Manny Ramirez in Pittsburgh. The top vote getter is taking a disproportionate amount of heat for missing the game, even getting openly questioned on yesterday’s Fox telecast. Tim McCarver said the worst thing about his knee injury was “remembering which leg to limp with.” It’s easy to say that Ramirez is faking an injury, but almost as easy to actually check on the injury. Ramirez is suffering from a small tear in the medial meniscus of his right knee. It’s an injury he can play with, but one that can “grind,” a bone-on-bone situation that is unpredictable and painful. The decision was made a while ago by the Red Sox to keep Manny on the field as much as possible. One possible solution that’s been mentioned is using Ramirez at DH more often, moving Kevin Youkilis to LF and David Ortiz to 1B. There’s some defensive penalty to be paid, but it keeps the best bats in the lineup.

Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe was able to get at least some confirmation that this isn't total bullsh!t.

Trot Nixon suffered with this last year and had a very disappointing second half: 241/.326/.386

Might be wise for Manny owners to sell high.

Funny to hear people criticize the poor guy.....the only thing I didn't like was that he didn't go to the game to show appreciation but I have no idea how often he gets time off so i'm not gonna criticize him fro anything.

More on the Manny soap opera

THE NEWS
There was more than a fair share of people unhappy over Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez and his decision to skip the All-Star game for the second straight season, citing rest. A report by Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll claims Ramrez has "a small tear in the medial meniscus of his right knee." Yet, no one, including the Red Sox medical staff has conducted an MRI on Manny, making such diagnosis pure guess work at this point. There is currently no plan to conduct an MRI on the 34-year old outfielder, the Boston Globe reports.

Our View
Both Baseball Prospectus and Will Carroll have a strong reputation in the baseball industry, so it's hardly like we're talking about some backwoods operation throwing darts at the wall. The things we do know are: 1) Manny has been playing through knee soreness most of this season and 2) a torn meniscus is an injury that players can often play through. With both those points in mind, we see no reason for fantasy owners to bench Manny this coming week.

You don't need an MRI to diagnose it. The symptons are pretty straightforward.

Ortiz playing some first could really help Manny get some moe DH Time... Or I'm wondering if Manny could play first.

Sure he could play first...it doesn't involve throwing the ball.

agreed that this is the logical approach to solving the problem. however, putting either manny or ortiz at 1b is a huge liability for the team. though probably not as much of a liability as having manny running around out in LF with a bum knee.
