No, it is a team that values OBP over speed in the leadoff slot. That is not what Moneyball means. It might be true of the Moneyball philosophy at some time, but Moneyball is not specifically about OBP, or SLG, or drafting college players. It is about finding value where others don't see it.

Now you're just being ridiculous and stubborn so you don't have to admit you were wrong.
i wasnt trying to be rude. i think it's awsome that they bat youlk leadoff.
and dk, i can see what your saying about finding value. maybe im just using moneyball in the wrong way. i was talking about teams valueing obp, slugging and legit college ball players.

That's not the philosophy. You are using it in the wrong way, but it's pretty common to do so (most people have a skewed view of what Moneyball really is), so don't take it to heart.
That was the philosophy of Moneyball (stress on this next part) when the book was written. The game has changed, and the value of each statistic/intangible has changed with it. Moneyball philosophy may or may not encorporate OBP, Slugging, college players- it's what the market dictates.
I mean, Oakland took HS kids in the first 2 rounds this year.

verrrry interesting. definetly makes sense. good stuff.
Currently watching a ESPN Classic re-cap of the 1981 All-Star Game. Each of the the leadoff men were 1st baseman: Rose & Carew.
Could this possibly happen in todays game?
No. Rose and Carew don't play any more.

It may be an incorrect interpretation of the book, but nevertheless 'moneyball' has colloquially become a term meaning that sort of offense, emphasising 'OBP, power and not giving away outs.'

its possible, just not likely to be a common occurence. rose was usually an outfielder but finished up as a 1b. he was about 40 in 1981. there could be another popular aging player extending his career by playing 1b and getting an all-star selection. nomar garciaparra kind of fits that situation but he isnt as old as rose was.
It would be more accurate to say the Red Sox are a sabermetric team--they favor statistics-based analysis over conventional wisdom. And teams like that usually value high-OBP guys in the leadoff role over big base stealers.
So while they're not a moneyball team, they are more likely to use Youk leading off in the future than, say, the Yankees or Marlins would (if they had him).
