HOUSTON (Ticker) - What began as a nice season for Sidney Ponson has evolved into a disappointing one.
Ponson, who began his first campaign with the St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-0 record, was designated for assignment by the team Friday.
The Cardinals made the move to clear space on their roster for righthander Jeff Weaver, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday.
In 14 games with the Cardinals, Ponson went 4-4 with a 5.24 ERA. He struck out 33 and walked 29 in 68 2/3 innings as opponents batted .308 against him.
