Fastest Street Legal Production Car

Postby Chrisy Moltisanti » Fri Jul 07, 2006 3:54 am

I've heard and seen a lot of people try to claim one car or the other is the fastest street legal production car. Let's read what you think or can prove.

Production car will be defined as 100 or more per year, so the McLaren F1, Koenigsegg CCR, Bugatti Veyron and Corvette Sledgehammer do not count.

Fastest will be determined by a combination of 0-60 (62), quarter mile and top speed.

I'll nominate the 2006 Corvette Z06.

0-60: 3.6 (0-62mph)
1/4 mile: 11.7
Top speed: 198

6.2 pounds per horsepower ratio at ~ $75K!

First of all, you can't "nominate" the fastest production cars. They can be measured. I can nominate a Saturn Ion...but it doesn't mean anything.

Second, I'm not sure where you are getting that 0-60 time from. Automobile Mag did 0-60 on it and got 4.1, R&T got 4.2, Autoweek couldn't get it under 5 seconds. Not sure where the 3.6(!) is coming from. I saw Car and Driver showed 3.6, but their 5-60 was 4.3? Something fishy with Car and Driver considering every other magazine wasn't even close to that fast of a 0-60.

Third, the Ford GT is faster in all (0-60, 1/4 mile, and top speed).

You're right. It's a strange thread.

The Bugatti Veyron probably is, with it's 1001 HP. It has 4 turbos I believe, so in a way it's "cheating" as you can add 4 turbos to any car and make it insanely fast.

I like to look at naturally aspirated factory cars.

Omaha Red Sox's nominations are good ones. I'll add:

1970 Chevy Chevelle SS454 or LS6 (454 c.i./450HP)
1970 Plymouth Hemi-Cuda (426/425)
1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt (427/425)
1968 Shelby Mustang GT-500 KR (428/400...light weight too!)
1966 427 Cobra (427/425...hardly any weight!)
1969 Road Runner (440/390)

Don't forget the Viper GTS, V10. ;-D [/b]

I don't know if it's the fastest car in the world, but this is the first one I would buy if I had the money.

Well, technically, wouldn't the fastest street legal production car be the fastest car at stock? Technically, the McLaren F1 LM was the fastest for a while, until Koenigsegg rolled around. I believe if Saleen put extra horses in their S7, I'm sure they could be the fastest. Just a lightweight supercar compared to the Bugatti Veyron.

I know it's a tuner car but a few years back, Lingenfelter tuned a Chevy Corvette C5 with a 427 Twin Turbo V8. It ran the 0-60 in just 2 seconds at only 800+ bhp at 4600 rpm, 866 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm, with a redline at 6500 rpm. It also ran the 1/4 mile in 8.9 seconds at a speed of 153 mph. Impressive when you consider a 2002 Hennessey-tuned Dodge Viper with a twin-turbocharged 8.3 V10 at nearly 1100 hp had ran a similar 0-60 and 1/4 time.
