Phil Hughes start on 7/3/06

Phil Hughes in the game on 7/3 was pulled after 4 2/3 innings with his team ahead 10-0.
He had given up 2 hits, 2 walks, and 0 runs with 9 K's.

Was he pulled because he is on a strict pitch count or was there some other reason?

It seems like a really strange time to pull someone who is pitching effectively.

You have to remember the #1 rule of minor league coaches. Prepare the players to be major leaguers, not get the wins. And if the Yanks say 80 pitch count, then that is what the manager will follow through with.

He was on a strict pitch count due to throwing 113 pitches less than 2 weeks prior to that... They don't want to overwork the star prospect

Looks like Hughes was just skipped in the Trenton rotation.

Anybody have any news as to why?

(The 80 pitch limit theory is starting to fall apart).

Hughes' outing was not good 3 earned in 1 IP, two K's. He throws hard though, was clocked at 95-96. The Yankees are going to release Chacon, who is going to be their 5th starter ? Any chance Hughes comes up after the break ? Announcers said that if he was more consistent with his breaking ball, he could pitch in MLB right now. On the heels of the Pelfrey call up, maybe maybe he gets a call up.

I've heard rumors about that too. MY best guess is they'll try and find someone via trade, but it is entirely possible they can't find anyone worth what they'd have to give up. If they look internally, I would assume Hughes would get the call.

The problem is the Yankees having very little to trade. Who are they going to deal ???? their farm system is very light on talent and they stated that Hughes is an untouchable. My gut feeling is that they give him a shot within the next month.
