What's the official word here (if any) ... is SD going to let Hoffman close if he returns in September or keep with Beck? I'm thinking about picking Beck up in a trade.
No offense, pkarr...but that's just dumb. He's been "resting" all season. Once he's fit to pitch, that's it...he pitches. And seeing as Hoffman is among the best closers of all time, he gets his job back as soon he's ready. Figure him for two or three warmup stints possibly, and then he closes. Obviously, Beck has done a terrific job, but Hoffman is the SD closer till he shows he's no longer capable of getting the saves. If the Padres were in a pennant race, there could be an argument made that they need to stay with the hot hand. Since that's not the case, they need to get Hoffman ready for next year by putting him back into tight spots this year.

i agree with pkarr....anyways its no sure thing that hoffman's rehab continues to go smoothly without setbacks. with the pads looking to next year, their new ballpark and their potential offseason signings, it would probably be in their best interest to rest hoffman (or limit his workload upon his return to occasional setup appearances) and let beck keep going since he has been effective.

none taken. i just think that it would be better for beck to finish what he started. whats the point of hoffman coming back when they already have a solid reliever who has gotten the job done, its not like they have anything to prove but it shows beck how much they care about him. i say at least show beck they are grateful and have hoffman start next year on a clean slot. there's no rush.
Beck in August
Hoffman in September (barring any setbacks)
All indications are that Hoffman will eventually return to the closer role after his expected return on 9/1. Beck already has stated he would be comfortable with returning as a set up man next season for Hoffman. If Hoffman doesn't close until 2004, then what confidence do the Padres and, more importantly, Hoffman have in the post surgery results.? Good results in September would be a boon to both the team and the player.
Beck has already said that he wants to set up Trevor this year. once Trevor is ready. Bochy said that Trevor will see a few innings till he is ready. Then it is his job.
