Mets activate C Piazza from 15-day disabled list

Postby pkarr5000 » Wed Aug 13, 2003 7:02 pm

The New York Mets, with little left to play for this season, Wednesday activated their best player - catcher Mike Piazza - from the 15-day disabled list.

Piazza had been sidelined since May 17 with a severe right groin strain. The injury cost the 34-year-old backstop most of season and temporarily derailed his attempt at becoming the all-time home run leader among catchers.

Piazza, who suffered the injury on a check swing in San Francisco, is eight homers shy of Carlton Fisk's record of 351. At the time of his injury, Piazza was under growing pressure to begin a transition to first base - a move made much easier with New York in the midst of a rebuilding season.

Batting third in Wednesday's game against the Giants, Piazza is hitting .333 with seven homers and 15 RBI in 32 games this season. He is a career .321 hitter with 354 homers and 1,088 RBI since breaking in with Los Angeles in 1992.

To make room for Piazza on the active roster, the Mets optioned outfielder Jeff Duncan to Class AAA Norfolk of the International League. The 24-year-old hit .263 with a homer, 10 runs and six RBI in 30 games with New York.

Yep, already homered. Time to get him back in the lineup if you have him.

Ibanez, Looper, or Beck. I would lean towards Looper, he hasn't been good recently.

Damn, Jerome Williams got bombed by the Mets. He's been pitching awful lately. Come to think of it, all my pitchers have been sucking lately. At least I'm gonna get a win out of Millwood.
