White Sox place RHP Koch on disabled list

The Chicago White Sox on Wednesday placed righthander Billy Koch on the 15-day disabled list due to soreness in his pitching elbow.

Koch retired both batters he faced in Monday's 10-8 loss at Anaheim, but the struggling reliever has an 8.49 ERA in 11 2/3 innings over his last 11 appearances. He lost his closer's job and has not recorded a save since June 24.

The 28-year-old has allowed a career-high 10 homers this season, and Chicago has elected to use lefthander Damaso Marte and righthander Tom Gordon in his place as closer. Koch has four blown saves in 15 chances.

"This is the third time he's felt pain," manager Jerry Manuel said. "We feel this is the best thing to do to take care of it."

The White Sox recalled righthander Jon Atkins from Class AAA Charlotte of the International League to take Koch's roster spot.

I had both Koch and Jimenez as closers on my squad to start the year. Talk about hurting the ERA. But Brown and Nomo have saved me, now i lead the league with a 3.45. Koch was one of the biggest busts, but not as bad as Shawn Green.

What I meant was that it's gotten to a point where every pitcher that starts stinking up the place has "soreness" or "stiffness". It's no suprise to me that Koch has "soreness".

i guess this makes flash and marte even more secure in the closer roles (but i doubt even jerry manuel would have eventually let koch pitch in games not out of reach).
