Baseballs Secret Formula

Postby creepingdeath » Thu Jun 22, 2006 6:36 pm

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Discovery Science Channel is currently advertising a new show titled "Baseball's Secret Formula" that premiers on July 10th about how a simple set of mathematical equations is changing the game. It seems like it is going to be very interesting and it also interviews T. Francona. Has anyone seen the advertisement or have any insight regarding these equations?

Sounds interesting. Unlikely I will get to see it down here. :,-(

I'm guessing it will just be a documentary on Baseball_Prospectus? B-)

Show Summary:

(Hits + Walks + Hit-By-Pitch) divided by (At Bats + Walks+ Hit-By-Pitch + Sac Flys)

is more telling than

Hits divided by At Bats

Stolen Bases / (Stolen Bases + Caught Stealing)

is more telling than

Stolen Bases

And a few segments on Billy Beane being a genious, Bill James being a mastermind, and Theo Epstein being the young gun who won using their ideas.

My guess is that it's about sabermetrics which is really no secret. Gotta love the discovery channel. They will put the most ridiculous hype around anything just to get people to watch. A show about typhoons will be 'World Ending Mega Storms." A show about volcanos will be "Impending Flaming Doom!" And a show about sabermetrics is "baseball's secret formula."

I'll probably watch.

How many baseball fans are aware of the details of sabermetrics? I would wager it is a low percentage. Sure the fans who hang around on baseball forums are aware, but I would wager those people are more knowledgeable fans all the way around.

I think this special will be very informative for a large number of casual baseball fans.
