He's back!
National League MVP Albert Pujols, recovered from the strained right oblique muscle that landed him on the disabled list June 4, was activated and will start at first base tonight against the Chicago White Sox.
The Cardinals were 8-7 with Pujols on the DL, but they have been outscored 33-11 the past two nights in blowout losses to the White Sox.
To make room for Pujols on the roster, first baseman-outfielder Chris Duncan was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals also placed lefthanded starter Mark Mulder on the 15-day disabled list because of a shoulder problem. Details of Mulder's physical condition were not immediately available.
Mulder was pummeled Tuesday night in a 20-6 loss, allowing nine runs in Chicago's 11-run third inning. His earned-run average has ballooned to 6.09.
Righthanded pitcher Anthony Reyes was activated and is making the start tonight against the Sox.
Sidney Ponson, recently demoted to the bullpen, will return to the rotation for Sunday's game in Detroit.
STLtoday.com will have more on these developments tonight.
