I would assume being able to get the bat through the strike zone faster pretty much "slows" the ball down, thus being able to catch up to fastballs in general, or when waiting for a change-up, whatever...

And, he was able to hit the ball harder, which meant that he was able to find more holes and rack up the hits.
(I'm not saying he was on steroids, just giving another advantage that he had if he
was on them.)
