There was a point on Tuesday night when Mulder appeared on his way to a bounce-back performance, retiring the first six batters he faced through two perfect innings. But then came the third and an effective meltdown by the left-hander, as he allowed nine runs on 10 hits while recording only one out, including seven straight hits at one point. That has been the story of Mulder's performance for the past month; in his five starts since May 28, he's 1-3 with a 13.50 ERA, .434 batting average allowed and 10 homers allowed. Such numbers can't help but suggest a pitcher isn't quite at full health, especially when you consider that Mulder had lifetime numbers of a 3.97 ERA, .265 BAA and three homers allowed per five starts entering Tuesday. Plus, look at his opponents. Among those five starts were a game at pitching-friendly Petco Park and one each against the light-hitting Cubs and Pirates, games a typical Mulder should win. Tuesday's opponent was the potent White Sox, which is a much tougher matchup, and so is his next one, in Detroit on Sunday. Don't be at all surprised if the Cardinals bump Mulder from the rotation soon, provided he doesn't make a quick turnaround, which isn't looking likely. On the bright side, such a demotion would only help solidify Anthony Reyes' status as a permanent major leaguer

With Mulder and Ponson struggling, Reyes has a very good shot of nailing down a starting rotation job.

And Mulder is going to the DL not the bullpen, if he's going anywhere. Or maybe they should only play him at home at night if they want to have him decent outings.

I don't think they can afford to have Mulder out...it's not like after Reyes they have any good options. And if you held a gun to my head and told me I had to choose between Mulder or Ponson I'd just tell you to pull the trigger at this point.

So Schmoltzy says hes open to a trade...maybe he could be coming to STL...just a thought. He seems like a player who would be embraced by Cards fans.
