With second baseman Alfonso Soriano mired in a 5-for-38 slump, Yankees manager Joe Torre pulled him out of the leadoff spot and plugged shortstop Derek Jeter in his place. Soriano responded with a couple of base hits and a RBI Sunday. But Soriano continues to struggle in the field; his 14 errors lead all AL second basemen... Rookie Royals shortstop Angel Berroa continues improving at the plate and in the field, making him a darkhorse candidate for rookie-of-the-year honors. Hideki Matsui should win that award, obviously, but Berroa ought to get some votes... The Rangers would love to move slugger Juan Gonzalez, but his slow recovery from a leg muscle strain complicates any trade talk. Also, he is demanding that all his deferred money be paid up front, during the next two years, before he waives his no-trade rights... During his first three starts for the A's, rookie Rich Harden was 2-0 with a 0.86 earned-run average... Rangers first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, who nixed a deal to the contending Cubs, smacked five homers in a seven-game span to continue building on his Hall of Fame resume... Kelvim Escobar might prosper if the Blue Jays manage to get him through waivers and trade him this season. He is 5-1 with a 2.05 ERA as starter on the road, but just 2-5 with a 4.28 ERA in the SkyDome... Keep an eye on rookie Rangers speedster Ramon Nivar, a center fielder getting a late-season trial with Texas out of the race.
