Cardinals’ ace Matt Morris threw off a mound on Friday for the first time since fracturing his right index finger nearly three weeks ago. The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports manager Tony La Russa was encouraged by the session enough to suggest Morris could be back in the rotation on August 17. "I wouldn't think that's unrealistic the way today went," Morris said. "I'm shooting for as early as I can. I'm sick of sitting around here. That gets old fast." The plan calls for Morris to throw a bullpen session again on Sunday and then a simulated game on Tuesday. Morris suffered the broken finger when he was hit with a line drive off the bat of the Padres Mark Kotsay in the first inning of their game on July 21.
Keep track of his pitching sessions over the next week and be ready to return him to your fantasy rotation a week from Monday. Hopefully the time off helped Matt's shoulder a little too; it had been bothering h! im before the finger injury.
