Detroit Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young, and his attorney, could face legal sanctions after failing to appear in court Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence.
Young, who is accused of choking his former girlfriend on April 14 while the two were staying at the posh Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, and his attorney, William Swor, were scheduled to be in 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills.
Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Tare Wigod, told Bloomfield Hills District Judge Diane DAgostini that he talked to Swor earlier that morning. Wigod said Swor told him he had a scheduling conflict and had to be in federal court in Miami on an unrelated matter, and the pro ball player was is in an out-of-state hospital with a medical emergency, but could not elaborate about it.
DAgostini, however, said that Swor failed to notify the court soon enough, and ordered the Swor to appear at 8:30 a.m. Friday to explain why he was not there Tuesday. She also suggested that she might issue a bench warrant for Youngs arrest if he violated his bond order, who forbid him to drink alcohol or travel out of state except for work.
So choking your girlfriend doesn't seem to go over well with this judge.
It stuns me how some of these lawyers keep their tags. Didn't notify the court soon enough. Did they ever think that when he entered rehab they should maybe send off a note to the court?
The Tigers might seriously want to part ways with him, if for no other reason than to give his a chance to start with a clean slate elsewheres.[/code]
