I don't have any sort of back up for this, but I heard someone on ESPN say that there is "loose language" in the CBA that allows MLB to suspend players involved in the sale of banned substances. The evidence of Grimsley's purchase of the kits involves him the sale.
I find the speed at which the suspension went through interesting though because they couldn't have done much of an investigation.

Yeah that's what I read as well, and that Selig would likely try to use that clause to suspend him.

well it kinda sends a message to other players..
If a "retired" player is getting suspended for 50 games...what will the active players get?
