Besides, I'm pretty sure that any reference to "swing" when referring to baseball intrinsically includes all stages or phases. Same thing goes with golf. When you talk about a golf swing, you're not just talking about the down swing.
If that's what you mean, then that makes it much less "amazing" and "impossible but true" than you indicated in your original comment, IMO. So a hitter cocks his hands back before the pitch is thrown. What's so amazing about that?
I agree....
Hey, I never said I agreed with the "amazing" and "impossible" part.
Sorry Jose, my bad. A case of mistaken identity. I'm easily confused... For example, I thought that was Mickey RIVERS in your avatar.
Anyaway, obviously I should have said "than mak1277 indicated in his original comment." My humblest apologies...
I dont know about the whole guess thing is the only way to get a hit. People get hits 2 or 3 times out of 10. I dont think they can guess the pitch and location that many times out of 10
It's funny that some people say guess and some people don't.
It really matters what kind of swinger you are.
I have quick hands but no power. I react to the ball so I try not to guess when at the plate. I also use a 32 inch bat and hug the plate.
Power hitters have slower wrists that are more powerful. They look for a pitch in one spot and swing hard.
Guessing drops your average but ups your power.
Some guys just have a happy medium IMO. They guess late in the count or early in the count depending on their style.
For example last week I was playing and was down 0-2. I turned on my react-o-meter rather then looking for a pitch. I zone up pitches usually until I get to 2 strikes then I try to react.
I notice I can foul off a lot more bad pitches just reacting. This AB I did just that fouled off a few pitches. I saw the pitcher twitching with his ball and his glove and on the next pitch and though he was definitly throwing a curve. Fastball strike 3
So I think it really depends.
Hitting a 95 MPH Fastball really isn't that hard for me Cause once it leaves the pitchers hand I can pick up the spin and where its going.
Now hitting a 85 mph slider thats tough IMO.
Batting can't be all guessing and can't be all zoning up pitches.
Well for me it can't. I try to mix them both in the correct situations.
