Morneau working out at catcher.

Postby Fantasy Guru » Sun Jun 04, 2006 5:53 pm

Jun 4 Kelly Thesier, of Twins.MLB.com, reports Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau will begin to workout as a catcher, catching side sessions and doing some extra catching drills in preparation of being the club's emergency catcher.

Now I'm not saying he'll gain catcher eligibility, but it's something to watch for. Along with the Jays working Glaus in as a SS for a game (maybe more down the line) there's a couple of players who could skyrocket in value based on eligibility.

Strange that they would choose Morneau as the emergency catcher. Maybe he has some experience somewhere along the line. Normally a team will use one of their versatile utility players as the emergency catcher.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

While it would be nice, I doubt he sees anytime there.

Justin Morneau, the first baseman who was drafted by the Twins as a catcher, has been the team's emergency, third catcher all season, but Gardenhire said it's time he actually starts catching a few pitchers in the bullpen to get reacquainted with the job. Just in case.

Interesting. Didn't realize Morneau was drafted as a catcher. ;-)

Isn't this guy injury plagued and one of the least durable hitters in the league?

Why would they wear him out at backstop?

If anything, teach him some consistency.
