Justin Verlander, apparently struggling with a cut on a finger, gave up six runs in five innings Thursday against the Yankees. The 23-year-old Verlander wasn't crafty enough to use the blood to his advantage, instead choosing to wipe it off on his pant leg. The Tigers might want to bring in Gaylord Perry to mentor him for a few weeks. Verlander, who had won his previous four starts, wasn't involved in the decision in this one. He's 7-3 with a 3.12 ERA. I changed the title of this post to fix Verlander's name and because it was misleading since he doesn't have blisters AFAIK. I watched the game and although the results weren't there he looked good and battled through the injury.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

he had a blister earlier in the season, but i think it was on his back knuckle and it kept him from throwing his curve and he still dominated with the fastball. yesterday's injury seems completley unrealted
he's a rookie pitcher, he's gonna have ups and downs, but i dont think this is anything to worry about
