Coffey, reds closer?

Reds manager said coffey will get the next save chance, and he has been having a much better year than weathers. I just grabbed him (have weathers too) and am starting him over weathers. holdin onto weathers in case this isn't real, but is it? do the reds have a new closer?

Sounds like an easing in/trial basis thing. Coffey's not 'proven' in the role while Weathers is a 'proven veteran' so the team wants to bring Coffey along slowly. As long as he performs well though I would expect him to eventually stay in the job.

I don't think Weathers will be any help to fantasy owners the rest of the way. He really looks like he is about done out there, definitely not closer material. So even if this is just an easing Coffey in sort of thing, I'd take a chance with him. He has pitched too well and Weathers has pitched too poorly for it to go any other way.

Absolutely. 12 team mixed leagues or deeper should have Coffey rostered at this point.

Expect Coffey to get the lion's share of closing opportunities from now on (so long as he continues to pitch well). I don't think Coffey is as good as his stats are right now, but he is more than serviceable and has the goods to hold the job. If you are looking for cheap saves, Coffey should definately be rostered.

As for Weathers, I think his fantasy value is minimal at this point. You may want to hold on to him for a bit longer, just to be sure the job is indeed Coffey's, but otherwise is a prime drop candidate.
