EDMONTON — Having already forced the Ottawa Senators to reschedule an NHL playoff game, Dora the Explorer has found herself an even bigger target ... the Stanley Cup final.
The quest for a sixth Stanley Cup has put the Edmonton Oilers on a collision course with the seven-year-old cartoon girl and her monkey sidekick.
Dora the Explorer’s stage show is booked at Rexall Place for June 17, the same day the NHL has scheduled Game 6 of the final series, should that game be necessary.
Northlands Park became aware of the issue when the NHL released the schedule Tuesday morning, spokeswoman Bonni Clark said. Rexall Place, the arena where the Oilers play, is run by Northlands Park.
The NHL, Rexall Place and organizers of the Dora show were all working together Tuesday to come up with a solution, Clark said. Several options were on the table, although Clark wouldn’t say what they were.
This isn’t the first time Dora has stymied a Canadian hockey club during playoffs. In the second round, the Ottawa Senators were forced to delay Game 2 against Buffalo because the popular Latina heroine had five shows scheduled at Scotiabank Place on May 6 and 7.
The television show Dora the Explorer airs on Nickelodeon in the United States and on Treehouse TV in Canada. In each episode, the bilingual Dora goes on an adventure with her talking backpack and Boots the monkey, who help her overcome obstacles in Spanish and English.
Nancy Romanycia, who is in charge of marketing for the Edmonton dates, said 5,292 of about 6,600 tickets had been sold for the two June 17 shows. For two shows on June 18, 4,409 tickets have been sold. Prices range from $17 to $46.75, plus service charges.
The Oilers will play either the Carolina Hurricanes or the Buffalo Sabres in the championship series.
How dumb do you have to be to schedule the NHL finals without even checking to see if the buildings were free for those times?
I don't see the problem with rescheduling Dora, with all of the illegal immigrant anger in the States I think that she's probably going to chill up in Canada for a little while. Nickelodeon doesn't want her to get deported.
Maybe they could have the show at the same time, then Dora and Boots could suit up for the Leafs next season....they could use all the help they can get.
