While I agree that there are about 8 catchers playing better than Varitek right now, but I'll say that there are about 10 second basemen who are playing better than Cano.

Ok, could you name all ten of them?
He ranks 7th in OPS, among only 11 2B who qualify. Surely he's playing better than Belliard, Polanco, Ellis and Hill. That places him still at least 1 player better than Varitek.
No question, both are bad statistical choices though.
1. Jose Lopez
2. Ty Wigginton
3. Luis Castillo
4. Tadahito Iguchi
5. Adam Kennedy
6. Mark Loretta
7. Mark Grudzielanek
8. Brian Roberts
9. Placido Polanco
While he has a lower OPS, he has higher WS, both batting and fielding, and has created more runs
Those 9 are more productive 2B so far this season
You could make a case for Kinsler, DeRosa, or Ellis to be 10, but I'll say Cano is better than them.

How about the AL EAST vs. NL or even better yet.....
Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees plus Tejada vs. NL
i know this is AL post but whats even more disgusting his how 32409 Cardinals are starting including Jim Edmonds.....please thats even more pathetic than Cano and Varitek combined.
About the AL Catcher contreversy.....Pudge is playing much like his old self this year. Posada has better numbers than Varitek. VMart Mauer. Its actually deeper than what most people realize.
For 2b I know BRian Roberts was hurt for a while but hes having a very very solid year again under the radar. Hes hitting .330 with 9 steals in 120 AB'S. He gets my vote over anyone else except possibly Iguchi
Only 2 things are certain in life...... death and Albert Pujols
What a ridiculous sham fan voting is. If the All-Star Game is supposed to represent the best players at each position over the course of the first half of the season, Varitek, Cano, Ortiz, Damon, Manny, and even A-Rod are all off the list.
It's unfortunate that supposed baseball "fans" fail to recognize the 1st half accomplishments of much more worthy candidates like Thome, Hafner, Jose Lopez, Iguchi, Rios, Glaus, Wells, and Mauer. How boring is it to pick the same old names every year regardless of how well they're playing.
But it is the same every year--Griffey, Ripken, and Boggs always used to get free passes; now I guess it's Manny, Ortiz, A-Rod, etc. I thought things might be improving last year when Brian Roberts got voted in, but I guess that was just an abberation.
The bottom line is, so-called fans have proven that they are not up for this assignment. Not even close. What an embarrassment!
