Eric Milton: Selected by New York Yankees in 1st round (20th overall) of 1996 amateur entry draft (Same Year as Nick Johnson)
Zack Day: Selected by New York Yankees in 5th round (149th overall) of 1996 amateur entry draft
Brandon Claussen: Selected by New York Yankees in 34th round (1026th overall) of 1998 amateur entry draft
Melky Cabrera: Signed as undrafted free agent by New York Yankees in 2001
Robinson Cano: Signed as undrafted free agent by New York Yankees in 2001
Chien-Ming Wang: Signed as undrafted free agent by New York Yankees in 2000
Brad Halsey: Selected by New York Yankees in 19th round (578th overall) of 2000 amateur entry draft (June Regular Phase).....
Phil Hughes: Selected by New York Yankees in 1st round (23rd overall) of 2004 amateur entry draft (June Regular Phase)
They had also drafted a number of guys (such as Mark Prior and Aaron Hielman) who they were unable to get signed, for whatever reason.
I'm not saying that the Yankees did a great job drafting guys during that time period. As a Yankee fan, I'm glad we've got different people in charge of the draft than we did then. Just throwing some stuff out there.
I would point out that:
Milton blows and is arguably the worst SP in MLB that has a regular job. He compliments another Yank bust in Christian Guzman who is arguably the worst hitter in MLB that has/had a job until just recently. Both were traded for Knoblauch who (throwing problems not withstanding) was valuable cog on the Yankee Championship teams from 98-00. Huge win of a deal for the Yanks.
Zach Day has never amounted to much (when he has managed to stay healthy that is).
Claussen has not amounted to much and was a 34th round pick.
Melky Cabera...did not realize he was signed that long ago as he is still very young. Still an undrafted free agent, which means a fishing expedition by Yankee management/scouting that paid off. Good obviously, but not a draft product.
Cano and Wang...see Cabrera.
Halsey...see Claussen
Hughes...TBD.

All the guys you say "blow" are still contributing to major league teams. Obviously, there are other teams out there who have produced more guys than that over a five year span...but this list really isn't bad compared to some other teams.
The fact that the Yanks drafted someone in the later rounds isn't a negative towards them. It's a positive.
Who cares if any of those guys weren't technically part of the draft? They aren't Ichiro or Hideki Matsui type guys...they were picked up due to scouting, which every other team can do (and the "small market" teams should do even more, due to their lack of ability to sign the Ichiro's).

I do not disagree with the last part about the undrafted player scouting. However, it should be pointed out that the Yanks spend huge amounts of money on this and as such throw so many speculative gambles around that eventually, through just luck, some are bound to pay off. You do not hear amount the dozens of undrafted guys they sign for chump change and they never make it out of Rookie or A ball.
Other teams should spend more in this regard, I agree. But when your best talent is coming from these type of pickups, it means your regaluar scouting is AWFUL. Top round picks should at least pay off with something beyond marginal MLB players like Claussen and Milton and Guzman. Where are the Jeter, Williams, Posada, Mo, Pettitte types during this timeframe? Not a single player of quality was developed in the usual manner. And until the arrival of Cano and Wang just recently, not a single decent player outside of NJ since the late 90s. They spend millions on Newman and those clowns in Tampa and they have not done a very good job to say the least.

Fortunately, he hit better in the fall league, but things still aren't looking impressive.
Well I'm pretty sure that is the exact same thing he would tell you. What else could he tell you besides he hasn't performed the last 2 years? Also everyone hits in the AFL, it's basically a written rule so I wouldn't put much stock into that.

You mean as opposed to the Bonds Apologists, the Yankee Bashers, the Met Bashers, the Red Sox Fans, or the overall NY haters on this board.
