Two morsels-
According to Arizona manager Bob Melvin, Valverde is still his closer, and he's getting the night off on Tuesday simply because he's overworked. Valverde threw 10 pitches on Sunday and another 18 on Monday while blowing ninth-inning leads in both games. However, Valverde has now given up a run in each of his last five outings, and he's been awful over that stretch (giving up nine runs in just 3.2 innings and allowing 17 of 28 batters to reach base). Should Valverde falter once more when he next gets the opportunity to pitch in the ninth, it's quite possible we could see a closer change in Arizona. Don't dump Valverde just yet, but now isn't the time to trade for him, either.
May 30 The East Valley Tribune reports Arizona Diamondbacks CL Jose Valverde did not pitch Tuesday, May 30, as RP Jorge Julio threw instead. Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin would not comment on whether or not the club would go with Julio as its closer instead of Valverde. "Julio will close tonight and then we'll take a look at it down the road," he said. "That's all I'm really prepared to say."
I picked up Julio in two out of three leagues in which I am starved for saves. I would have suspected Lyon would get the nod, but this seems to indicate that Julio is the #2 guy.
