Speaking of rewarding your patience (and I'm not talking about Jason Bay), Weeks has been swinging an incredibly hot bat this month and his stock is slowly climbing with it. And although right now it seems like contributing second basemen are a dime a dozen with the emergence of people like Jose Lopez and Dan Uggla, among others, I'm sure many of his owners that have held on to him this whole year are beginning to breathe a sigh of relief and start to expect numbers close to what his 'potential' was at the beginning of the year.
For the last month, Weeks has:
26 runs (tops among all 2nd basemen)
5 homers (Soriano, Hall, and Lowell have more)
7 stolen bases (3rd best among 2nd basemen; Lopez, Phillips
.366 batting average (2nd only to Mark Loretta)
Compared to Chase Utley over the past month (whom I consider the best 2nd baseman in the game), there numbers look like this:
I would rather have Weeks numbers than Utley's out of those two stat lines, with Utley's rbi's and Weeks stolen bases being a wash, but Weeks better batting average giving him the advantage. Now let's see how they finish the rest of the year, I might do another post on this in 4 weeks.
He got off to a slow start, which I hope wouldn't last to long. He did have the surgery in the offseason that might of been a reason, but it's nice to see he has his power stroke back now. As long as they leave him up there in lead off he should have a pretty good shot at being a 20/30 guy at 2B. Of course he won't have as many RBI's if they did, but those should come in future years as they move him more in the middle of that line up.
So who is the best second baseman in the game (fantasywise)?
No contest
My guess is that if you are in an auction league you paid a hellva lot more for Soriano or Utley. If you were in a standard draft you probably drafted those 2 guys in the 2nd round; at least 4 rounds earlier than Weeks, probably a lot more. Weeks is starting to pay dividends now without investing so much. I think some Weeks owners were worried that he wouldn't live up to the hype. We're all just a little excited now that he's performing close to a top 2B.
Heathos, do address this again after another month. I'll be interested in the results.
