Alfonzo signs with Toronto

Postby Havok1517 » Thu May 25, 2006 7:39 pm

Rotoworld

Blue Jays signed infielder Edgardo Alfonzo to a minor league contract.
Alfonzo will initially report to Double-A. It seems the Blue Jays want both him and Russ Adams playing second base for now, and that'd be tough to do if they're at the same level. May. 25 - 4:13 pm et

Alfonzo has stated before that he wishes to play 2B for some team. McDonald is supposedly the starting SS with Adams down in the minors now. I was thinking that Hill could move to SS and let Lil' Cat play 2B. His defens is suspect but his defense is better than McDonald's bat. Lil' Cat has alright fielding % at 2B, not sure about range though. This would also allow Reed Johnson to play LF and hit regularly. His splits are impressive in some areas. Also, can they please trade Trade Hinske to maybe Philly or SD? The rumored Adam Kennedy deal (for maybe Hillenbrand) is also a possibilty.

Whatever the Jays end up doing, they need some MI help despreatly. Alfonzo is more of a bandaid option then anything else. Not to take away from the guy, I think he'll be a postiive factor in the franchise this year, its not like he signed a huge contract.
Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! BLUE JAYS WIN!

According to Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail, this is essentially a temporary fallback option in case the Jays don't complete the Kennedy deal by the weekend.

I think the most up-to-date thing there would be the Blair article.

Kennedy deal?

rumour is kennedy for hillenbrand straight up.

makes sense from the jays perspective b/c they have a glut of of/3b/1b/dh's, and little in their middle infield. i guess the angels just need anybody who can hit.

i didn't realize alfonzo was a free agent before this?.. :-?

He wasn't. Alfonzo batted .100 for the Angels this season, and got cut.

Would any Mets fan mind Alfonzo coming back to play 2nd for them? Couldn't be worse than Matsui plus he's got a place in our hearts.
