got the information via a Cards message board. They had heard it via an interview on Mike and Mike.

Another poster has since posted that they understood LaRussa to say if there were any doubt about the injury they were going to put him on the DL to guard against long term effects at the end of the season.

I'll change the topic title accordingly.

Regardless, there's a good chance Carp will miss his next start. The question is when will he return?

Whether they put him on the DL or not will depend mostly on whether they need to add a player to the roster or not - not the injury. Since this is something that started over 10 days ago they could put him on the DL retroactive to that date and only have him on the DL for 5 days from today. They could make it retroactive to his last start if they expected him to be out for 10 days, too. Basically they'll put him on the DL if they need to make a roster move...if not they'll leave him on the active roster and just let him rest.

If he has to go on the DL...then do it. I want him to be healthy for the rest of the year after this bump in the road. I hope the Cardinals don't pull a Nationals way of thinking like what they did with John Patterson.

exactly.

I don't get the feeling that they think this will be a long term problem but that they may need the roster spot for Reyes to cover Carp's next start instead of having another bullpen start.

May 25 The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (back) is suffering from inflammation of a bursa sac between his right shoulder and ribcage. The Cardinals remain guardedly optimistic Carpenter will not be sidelined for an extended period.

Not quite right there.

He actually pitched May 19, so they could go retroactive to May 20, the day after his last game appeared, not when the injury actually occurred. But either way he would still be eligible to come off the DL around June 4, so he would really just miss this entire week and next week. ;-D

Thanks for correcting that...hearing guys go on the DL retroactive to a certain date I always thought they were post-dating to the date of the injury. It's good to know it's to the last appearance. ;-D

From Rotowire:

The Cardinals are unsure if Carpenter (inflamed bursa sac) will be able to make his next start, the team's official site reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "Basically, I guess the way they explained it to me is that it's like any other bursitis that you get," Carpenter said on Wednesday morning. "It's nothing serious, and it's not a bad thing. It's just a pain... and you have to wait for it to go away. If I continue to throw with it, it's going to be there for a long period of time. Once it goes away, they expect it to be gone, and not have to deal with it gain." We'll keep you posted on this situation.

So it's about what we're thinking if they're being up-front which it sounds like they were.
