Cubs should have traded Maddux when his value was highest

Maddux is 40 and 40 is not the new 30 in major league baseball. He'll be lucky if he finished the season with a .500 record.

I think he could still be a 15 game winner with a better team, but the Cubs are a long ways away from being very good.

Why would they trade him in April, in case you didnt notice teams are willing to give up more at the deadline when they have explored all their other options and failed. Only then, when they have no other option and are seeking to improve their rotation will they give up the most, whether the pitcher is hot or not.

Thats the main difference between real life gm's and fantasy gm's. Fantasy gm's, which is who you are associating with, try to trade their players based on their performance. Real life gm's trade their players when other real life gm's are most inclined to trade.

Also, SS should not be the position they would try to upgrade. Ronny Cedeno is doing fine and will only get better

People know exactly who Maddux is at this point in his career. His value wasn't impacted a bit by his hot start, and it isn't affected now that he's cooled off. Like a few other guys have said, this ain't fantasy baseball, and there aren't any newbies out there to exploit.

Maddux might have a no trade clause, but not from a 10-5 deal, as he has only been with the Cubs now 3 years.

I thought if you had the 10 years of service with 5 from any one club, you had the 10-5 no trade clause, no matter the team?

The fact is they were playing well and winning when Maddux was pitching well. Why then would they trade him when the Cub organization are hoping he can help, till Wood/Prior come back. Of course then Lee got hurt and the whole team has fallen apart. But at the time there was no reason to trade them, it's admitting to their fans that they don't care about this season and won't win. Whether it is true or not, you don't do it that early in the season when there is still hope.

Also I doubt Maddux could of fetched the prospects you listed, his value wasn't that much just due to a hot start. Everyone still knew he was an aging vet that might pitch decent, but on a downward slope.
