May 24: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Chris Carpenter might not make his scheduled start on Wednesday. Carpenter experienced stiffness in his back following his last start and told Cardinals trainers Tuesday that the discomfort had returned. If Carpenter can't go, Josh Hancock probably will start, splitting up the game with the rest of the bullpen.
I don't think Carpenter was Lowry's biggest problem. I think it is the guy with the #5 on this back. Pitching against Thompson certainly improves his chances of walking out with a W.

Carpenter was nearly scratched from a start earlier this season because of a similar problem. Brad Thompson is going to fill in for him against the Giants. Carpenter will probably make his next scheduled start. If not, the Cardinals will recall Anthony Reyes to fill in for him.
