I am in a deep competitive league. I had Miceli a few weeks back. When he went down I picked up Walker soon after, and I am loving it! (fingers crossed).
I really at this point have only one more roster move available at closer for the rest of the season. When I drop a guy I lose all his stats for the season in my 5X5 roto 12-team league and gain all the stats of the guy I pick up.
Walker now has 7 saves (so I gain 4 there), 12 K's (so I lose 6 there), 8.265 ERA (so I lose there a small bit), 1.714 WHIP (lose there).
The other top guys available are not closers for their teams.
Do I just pull the cord on Cordero and roll the dice with Walker now? I ask this because when Gagne went down and it looked like a season ending injury I picked up Baez and had to drop Papelbon to do it. Papelbon was not entrenched as the closer at the time. Now I am kicking myself for making that move.
In my 16 team, 6x6, 20 man roster H2H league closers are like rocking horse droppings. Saves are tough to come by and I have three closers with the addition of Walker.
Given that my team will pitch maybe 50 innings in a week, I don't see that having Walker give up a couple of runs every so often is that big of a deal. After all, I am way ahead on both ERA and WHIP this week having had Chacon blow sky high on Monday. Surely there's more potential damage from a starter blowing up (think Randy Johnson) than there is from a closer? A couple of saves in a week can win you that cat outright.
I think we all know what we get from Walker, I don't think anyone is expecting him to get 30 saves and have a sub 3 ERA and good WHIP but just enjoy the ride while you can. I certainly am now.....
