Ok, I just have to ask this question. Does anyone remember a season when closing situations changed this much around baseball? I honestly can't remember any season in recent memory that had this many closers lost their jobs. Consider this...
New York Mets
Closer was Armando Benitez
New Closer is Dan Wheeler, Dave Weathers, John Franco.
Texas Rangers
Closer was Ugueth Urbina
New Closer is Francisco Cordero
Milwaukee Brewers
Closer was Mike DeJean
New Closer is Leo Estrella, Danny Kolb.
San Francisco Giants
Closer was Rob Nen
New Closer is Tim Worrell
San Diego Padres
Closer was Trevor Hoffman
New Closer is Rod Beck
Cincy Reds
Closer was Scott Williamson
New Closer is TBA
Pittsburgh Pirates
Closer was Mike Williams
New Closer is Mike Lincoln, Duaner Sanchez.
Toronto Blue Jays
Closer was Kelvim Escobar
New Closer is Cliff Pollitte.
Colorado Rockies
Closer was Jose Jimenez
New Closer is Speier, Fuentes.
Just off the top of my head, but you get the idea.
DeJean got the save for Milwaukee tonight. So he's still in the mix.
Anyway to answer your question. This year has been very crazy as far as closers go. Worse than usual.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
You forgot Boston, and their failed closer by committee experiment.
"One of the teams represents truth, justice, the American way, and underdogs everywhere. The other represents George Steinbrenner!" - U.S. News and World Reports columnist John Leo on the difference between the Mets and the Yankees.
Well, I don't really know if DeJean is in the mix or not, but if he is in the mix a two inning save might be his only chance.
As for the D-Rays, Carter struck out 3 batters in his save tonite and looks like his job is safe for now.
Then there's the Red Sox, how could I forget.
Speaking of Sox, how about Billy "Rodent Hanging From Chin" Koch.
He's finished. That job belongs to "Flash" Gordon and Marte.
I suppose we may as well add the M's who really have bounced around the closers committee. With Sasaki out, the job has belonged to nobody in particular but Hasegawa is the man for now.
People assumed that Alfonseca would take the Cubbies job, but Borowski has that job locked up now.

Come on, Carter's job is not safe at all. Check out the last few games of TB, instead of just tonight's game. Lou already said that they are doing a closer by committee until the bullpen settle. He may get his job back if he continues to do well though.

You forgot to mention that he also gave up a homer to Greg Myers during his save, making a 9-7 game a 9-8 game.
Actually the home run that Carter gave up in the 9th was to Delgado. Delgado started the 9th off with a home run, then Carter struck out the next 3 guys.

Ok, I did say safe "for now." Do I believe he is going to be the closer by years end, not really. But, Travis Harper is about as bad as Carter and Al Levine is on the trade block.
