The Actuarial Game of Baseball

Postby Big Pimpin » Tue May 16, 2006 12:30 pm

Came across this article in an actuarial magazine (an actuary is basically one who is an expert in assessing risk - and I'll be a credentialed one in a year or so :-) ). Anyway, it talks a little about the evolution of Sabermetrics, starting with Bill James in the 70s and continuing to today. It's a couple years old, but still very interesting.

Enjoy. ;-D

Allan Roth invented OBP in 1954. He was asked by Branch Rickey to create a stat that better evaluated a player than Batting Average. That's the only issue that I have with the article. Other than that. ;-D ;-D ;-D

Cool article, it essentially sums up Moneyball for those of us with ADD.

Good luck on that first test, it's crazy. I'll have to put this on my reading list for later.

I've actually passed the first four tests... I'm 4/5 so far. But yeah, they're hard all right. :-)

Hope you like the article. ;-D

congrats, I took the first one ten years after college, so I didn't do very well on the statistics half of it. Did decent on the Cal part, just not well enough to pass. I may take it again, not sure yet though.
