Red Sox 5th Spot Less Feared?

Postby klvrdude » Mon May 15, 2006 8:22 pm

Manny is certainly protecting Papi, and Ortiz is getting his pitches to hit. But who is protecting Manny? In the few Sox games that I have seen this year, it seems like Manny is getting quite a few more unintentional/intentional (Bonds style) walks this year.

Checking back at who hit in the 5 hole last year and it looks like Nixon and Millar took the bulk of the AB in that position. This year it looks like Nixon is getting the bulk and Tek has some as well. Now that there hitting lineup is a little weaker in the bottom are teams changing their approaches through the Sox lineup? Have clubs just decided not to let Manny beat them?

Is anyone else seeing this too, or am I just delusionally trying to rationalize something that is not there :-? ?

rather see Manny in the 3 spot, not sure how that would effect the lineup though.

Would mean 3 successive lefties in Papi, Nixon and Tek. A bit of an issue if teams are carrying LOOGIES.

I agree it would put two lefties back-to-back, but Tek is a switch hitter so that's not completely true ;-) .

Back to the issue at hand: Are team now starting to pitch away from Manny more this year then in years past?

Name the good lefties in AL pens? I am sure teams shudder at the thought of having to face Vilone, Myers, Holtz, Halama, Schoenweis, etc.

It seems like the Red Sox are 1 big bat away from dominance.

Opposed to having only Johnny Damon in the OF, a rotation of oldies Johnson & Mussina and 2 one-year wonders (Pavano & Wright), and no farm system.

The Red Sox have a strong pitching crop to choose from, that could contribute this year, where the Yankees really only have Hughes. I do agree that the Red Sox need a momumental upgrade @ SS. Maybe the Yankees would trade their best SS...AROD??? LOL jk Seriously though, maybe Izturis, Betemit, or Aybar could be had for Foulke maybe?

I love it when you Yank bashers have to turn a Red Sox criticism onto the Yanks liek somehow that validates the original point? Did anyone say the Yanks would dominate or were a player from dominating...No. The state of our staff has nothing to do with the fact that the Red Sox staff is hardly stunning and they have no SS. Dominating...yeah right...against the O's and the great Rodrigo Lopez.
