I've never known why players put it on their bats.

So batters dont lose the grip on their bats during a swing and throw it into the stands, dugout, at the pitcher, etc.

I'm guessing Julio Franco doesn't use the stuff, since he seems to launch a bat into the stands in every at-bat. :-b

Yeah, ever since he turned 80 he seemed to have lost a little grip on the bat. I guess that comes with age.
