What's a better predicter of actual performance?

ERC or DIPS ERA? And please explain.

The basic difference between Component ERA (ERC) and DIPS is that ERC uses the actual hits the pitcher allowed while DIPS uses a league average hit rate. DIPS tends to correlate better as it will bring strong outliers (both good and bad) back towards the mean.

Thanks Tavish, this probably means that Josh Johnson's rediculous .190 BA in balls in play won't hold up and his ERA will rise dramatically.
