Should I give up on the Saves Category?

Postby Magnus_CA » Fri May 12, 2006 12:14 pm

I'm in a SAVE hungry 5x5 12 owner $$$ Roto league. My only legitimate closer is Gordon, who's been a monster this year, but I'm still last in saves with 11 total (the current leader has 31). I've been unable to move Jeter for a closer, no one wants to bite. I also put Burrell on the block and the best offer I got was Reitsma. I may have some interest in moving Burrell and Jeter for Arroyo and Ray but that just seems silly to me.

Should I just say screw the saves category? I know I could move Gordon for a top 5 Starting pitcher, or maybe a top 20 SP and a decent offensive player. Is it possible to win if I tank saves?

BTW, I'm currently in 3rd overall.

Thanks for the help guys!

Here's my roster:

C M. Barrett (ChC - C)
1B B. Broussard (Cle - 1B)
2B F. López (Cin - 2B,SS)
3B M. Mora (Bal - 3B)
SS D. Jeter (NYY - SS)
OF P. Burrell (Phi - OF)
OF J. Gomes (TB - OF)
OF J. Pierre (ChC - OF)
Util T. Hafner (Cle - Util)
BN A. Kearns (Cin - OF)
BN T. Wigginton (TB - 2B,3B)
BN T. Iguchi (CWS - 2B)
DL D. Lee (ChC - 1B)

SP C. Zambrano (ChC - SP)
SP B. Zito (Oak - SP)
RP T. Gordon (Phi - RP)
RP S. Shields (LAA - RP)
P C. Young (SD - SP)
P K. Gregg (LAA - RP)
P D. Davis (Mil - SP)
BN J. Rauch (Was - RP)
BN D. Haren (Oak - SP)

Wow. Yeah, I think I'd dump Saves in a league whose priorities are this out of whack. Can't deal Jeter for a decent closer? Seriously believe you can deal a good, not great, closer (yeah, Gordon's been kicking ass for me this year, too, but it ain't gonna last) for a top 5 pitcher? If that's true, do it. And sit back and watch those other suckers chase their silly saves.

question... yeah FIRST is out of reach in saves... but what about 2nd and 3rd to last? Between Gordon, and random closers during the year you could move up a couple of points... unless you can get a stud back for Gordon he may help you get out of last at least

I don't think you have enough quality starting to punt saves. You need Gordon to remain competitive. It is possible to win without them, but abandoning saves means you must be near perfect in all other categories.

The days of the year in, year out, dominant closer have come to an end, and the opportunity to pick up a saves is there if you diligently watch bullpen situations in a number of different cities. Look at the changes we have seen already. You could definitely cut the likes of Rauch, Shields and Gregg in favour of a bullpen sleeper.

Gregg actually isn't on my team anymore. But why cut Rauch and Shields when they keep my ERA and WHIP down?

How about moving Burrell and Jeter for Arroyo and Ray?

Am I correct in saying that's rediculous trade for me?

Don't punt saves, or any cats for that matter.
It's still May, and there is A LOT of time to catch up.

There are plenty of question mark closers (Walker, Jones, Burgos, Guardado, Cordero, Reitsma, Weathers, Lidge, Baez, etc.)
There also will be at least 1 closer who will go down with injury during the season.

Just be patient, and keep your eyes on the ww for future potential closers.

I didn't say that those pitchers weren't valuable, but even though they keep the era and whip down, you don't need 2 pitchers in that mould. How many wins and saves have you gotten from that tandem? I think Shields may have one of each, right? Are there better choices out there? Surely, in a 12 team mixed league there must be. One such pitcher can help, but there are potential sleepers out there that will not hurt you in those categories and may come into saves. I thought we were talking about saves.
