should you drop a player such as hillenbrand or mulder regardless of whether it will help other teams more than the move will end up helping you as long as it even remotely upgrades your team?

You don't care about others, you care about YOURSELF

Are you interested in joining a 28 teams dynasty league? If so, PM me.

if it plugs a major need for your main copmetiion and does not hurt you too much to hold on to the player, i would say keep him

Unfortunately w/roto leagues, you have to rely on other teams to help you out.
I wouldn't give too much thought to the effect on other teams...at least this early. Hillenbrand I could see dropping...Mulder is more of a guy to trade (rather than flat out drop)

You should always examine trade options first. No sense giving an opponent a free shot at someone beneficial via the waiver wire.
