Rank These Closers

Postby Yanksrule75 » Sun Jul 27, 2003 4:28 pm

Just curious how everyone would rank these closers, based on job security and the number of saves you predict they will get in the second half.

Julio
MacDougal
Carter
Politte
Borowski
Looper
Speier
Kolb
Mesa
Gordon

Saves are really hard to predict, but I'll give it a go:

Here are the guys that are solid closers right now:
1. Borowski (with Alfonseca collapsing, he's secure and on a contending team- 15 saves)
2. Mesa (ugly ERA and WHIP, but no real competition for his job and on a great team - 15 saves)
3. MacDougal (Inconsistent and combustible but KC seems determined to stick with him - 12 saves)
4. Julio (Has been very solid lately but team will limit his save opps -- 10 saves)
5. Looper (Weak security with Urbina breathing down his neck, plus Marlins don't seme to generate many save opps - 10 saves, if he doesn't lose his job by the end of the year, which is likely)
6. Politte (Almost certainly will get his job back with how awful this bullpen is. Jays tend to win big though. 8 saves)

These guys are part time closers or aren't clearly the closer of their team, so take them last:

7. Gordon (right handed half of closing platoon, but Manuel is unpredictable with closers so nothing is guaranteed. 10 saves if Manuel doesn't switch things around)
8. Speier (also right handed half of closing platoon, and should get majority of save opps. Coors Field makes him risky though. 8 saves)
9. Carter (he's now the primary closer in a committee, and Tampa doesn't win enough games to make him worth much if he is splitting save opps. 6 saves)
10. Kolb (Brewers closer situation is a real mess, and Kolb is not clearly the guy. It could go back to DeJean, to Estrealla, Vizcaino, de los Santos, etc. 5 saves)

I'm gonna agree with jdh on this one. I just hope Looper can keep his job at least til I've gotten rid of him!

I think Borowski, Julio, Mesa are the most secure.
