I'm not saying Sanchez is only a 7th inning guy either. What Willie likes to do if he can is pitch either guy for 2 innings, hopefully the 7th and 8th, rather than pitch both for an inning.

As a Met fan who has watched every game this season I have no doubt in my mind that Sanchez would close if something happened to Wagner.
What are you guys doing?

yea true, i guess it would become more of a dual-closer role if wagner got hurt

One of you guys really needs to change your avatar. I thought extreme was arguing with himself for the past page.

Dirty Sanchez would be the closer if Wags went down. Someone stated that Willie likes RPs that can go more than one inning (Heilman) which is exactly why Dirty would be the closer...cause Heilman in a pinch could go longer than Sanchez.

Hoo, boy. It's Putz/Soriano all over again, and Wagner hasn't even turned into Guardado yet (the three blown saves were a nifty impersonation, though).

I'll play along, though ... my chips are on Duaner playing the role of Putz, if only because of more experience and previous work as a closer.

When Statistics Lie....

Keep in mind that this season has been a small sample size.
Heilman has a better k/9, same bb/9, same hr/9
ERA and WHIP are higher... therein lies the lie. Heilman has been a bit more unlucky than Sanchez so far. They have pretty much been the same pitcher.

Then take into account that Heilman has been doing this for at least half a year longer than Sanchez (check out Heilman's second half stats from last year), and you can see why Willie would choose to go with Heilman as his closer.

Even if you look at their career stats, it says that Heilman has the potential to be a better closer. He has a higher k/9 and lower bb/9 and similar hr/9. They have each pitched close to 200 innings. Case closed.

They have the same amount of experience. See post above ^. Sanchez has 8 saves, Heilman has 5. Did we forget that Heilman also logged some time as his team's closer last year?
