Jonny Gomes: "The Walking Machine"

Postby Doughhead » Mon May 08, 2006 10:37 pm

The prognosticators seem to be split on the legitimacy of Gomes' impressive start to the 2006 season. For everyone who is jumping enthusiastically on the bandwagon, at least one more seems to be crying "Sell High! Sell High!--and do it NOW!"

As a Gomes owner, my ears are to the ground on all these rumblings. Naturally, I'm very pleased with the double-digit home runs. But I've also noticed how much he has been walking (who knew this guy had so much plate discipline?) He just walked for the 27th time in his first plate appeareance tonight against Seattle. After perusing the leader board, I noticed that Gomes was part of an exclusive club, sitting in the top 10 in BB through May 7. Even more eye-catching are the names who appear with his; only Giambi, Abreu, Bonds, Pujols, Bay, Dunn, Manny, and Thome had collected more free passes than Mr. Gomes. That's some good company to be sure.

Yes, he has struck out 40 times, which can't be ignored and shouldn't be sugar-coated. However, those Ks are much easier to swallow when they are coupled with a healthy dose of BBs. Perhaps I was the only one who wasn't expecting this kind of contribution from Gomes. But I, for one, am pleasantly surprised.

So is his new name the Walking-Home-Run Machine??? What is he doing? Walking or Running?
Basically I'm complicated.
I have a hard time taking the easy way
I wouldn't call it schizophrenia
But Ill be at least two people today

If that's OK

And I can go on, and on, and on...

But who cares?

Walk, Homerun, Strikeout so far tonight. The guy does it all every game.

but yeah, from what i read he is a free swinger and DOES strikeout a lot, but at the same time he is still looking for good pitches to hit. So i guess it IS a combination of both.

like you said, the K's are disturbing but if his walk rate is for real he's going to have a really really good year

Last year I raved about his ability and underrated upside. I saw him as an eventual .290 100 40 110 20 player. I didn't expect him to reach it this soon however and took JD Drew over him. Guess it wasn't meant to be...

Oh yes, where was I. He'll always strike out a lot but I could see last year that he could take a lot of walks. His walks are for real, and so is his power and strikeouts. This year I've adjusted my projection for him to .280 90 35 100 10. He's a mini-Carlos Lee.
Bold Predictions:

Grady Sizemore will have more value than Jason Bay regardless of draft position

Aramis Ramirez in 155 G will hit over .300 40 HR 110 RBIs

Brian McCann will have more value than Jorge Posada regardless of draft position

Once Cantu, Huff and Lugo are all in the lineup playing well, Jonny G's numbers are only going to improve. I think he is for real guys!

Theres no way hes going to hit .290 over an entire season though.
.270 would be pretty good considering hes going to K more than 150 times! Hes an Adum Dunn type guy, low average coupled with mammoth power.

You can count on Gomes to either strike out, walk, or hit a homer. He is in a bit a mini Adam Dunn, but I do hope that he keeps his average up to Dunns standards. :-o :-o
