good ole number 19?

Postby hwiggen » Mon May 08, 2006 12:22 am

My son chose number 19 this year in baseball for his uniform number because that was his grandpa's number when he played.
I can't think of many famous # 19s over the years.
Three teams that I know of have retired the # 19:
Cleveland--Bob Feller
Chicago--Billy Pierce
San Diego--Tony Gwynn
I'd like to hear some other good players who wore # 19.

BTW, his grandpa pitched in high school and is from Cleveland which might explain why he wore 19.

I believe Jim Gilliam's #19 has also been retired by the Dodgers.

A number of greats wore #19 briefly, including Joe Medwick, Whitey Ford, Tony Lazzeri, and Paul Molitor.

Gilliam passed away before the 1981 World Series and the Dodgers wore a patch consisting of a black circle with the number "19" in white inside of the circle to honor him.
