I wish best of luck to Meredith. I kind of felt sorry for him because he just fell apart after he made his major league debut

I hope Doug is there tonight, Wakefield needs you :-o

This just came from a friend whom works for a Boston rag.

The Yankees were willing to pay Dougs salary in San Diego if they didn't trade him. Isn't that a violation of some rule or something? I could see if they traded for him to block, but can you pay someone elses Salary to block a trade?

Since when is it up to a C like Varitek to determine who he should or should not Catch? Are you saying Varitek is worse than Bard at catching Wakefield? I find that hard to believe as he has done it in the past.

IMO, this is strictly a Varitek does not want to/Wakefield like Mirabelli issue. Wakefield is hardly the first knuckle ball pitcher in the big leagues and I find it perposterous that a C like Varitek could not do an adequate job catching him if he had to.

There are few pitchers in history (knuckle ball pitchers included) that have had catchers for their own personal use and could dictate to a team roster/personnel decisions. And the ones I can think of are either HOF'ers or going to be HOF'ers.

Not that this makes a whole lot of difference, but I find it amusing that Boston needed to go to this extreme to placate Wakefield and Varitek and that the Yanks think this is a move worthy of them dealing for a C they do not need.

Terrible move by the Red Sox. They have two other former major league catchers in the AAA level in Ken Huckaby and Corky Miller. They could've been given a shot before resorting to Mirabelli.

I'd much rather that resources went towards getting pitching.

Ken Huckaby and Corky Miller? :-o Those guys aren't major leaguers anymore (you could argue that they never should have been).

Definitely a good trade by the Red Sox. Mirabelli can atleast catch Wakefield, and he can hit a bit too. Too bad the Yankees couldn't block the move..

With Mirabelli back, all we need now is Lou Merloni to win it in 2006 based on nostalgia alone!

Sox did overpay, wish they could have left off Cla or the player to be named later. It's a lot to give for a backup but hey, that's one less guaranteed loss out of the Sox's minds. It's good to have Doug back.

I don't think this is an issue of whether Wakefield deserves a personal catcher or not ... rather business...

Wakefied has 5 unearned runs in 32.1 IP this year = +1.4 run/9IP

If he had a 4 era + passballs = around 5.4 = worthless

Wakefield has a 4mil salary, Mirabelli 1.5mil, Bard 350K

so roughly +1mil to support a 4mil investment.

(note: salary from ESPN, don't know if accurate. Also did not delve into each of the unearned runs just assumed they were attributed to Bard... which may not be the case)
