If Wainwright gets a full season of starting next year, he'd probably be a decent #3 or 4 fantasy starter. His numbers are pretty ridiculous right now because he's able to throw hard and go all out on every pitch. As a starter not sure how well he'd do, but his value has definitely gone up this year. Been a great bullpen guy so far.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike
He would probably have more success as a relief pitcher than a starter. As a starter his potential is really not much more then a back of the rotation type guy, maybe having 1 or 2 years as a #3 if everything goes well.
there's also some talk, in the Cards fan community anyway, of his future as a closer after the excellence he has shown in relief. He's got good stuff and is obviously talented, but you have to wonder how much of it is what RAmst23 stated.
Part of that is also the patented Cards fan overreaction to some struggles from Izzy...who has that pesky contract for a while anyway.
I'm interested to see where he ends up but the impending free agency of 4/5 of the rotation may necessitate both he and Reyes being plugged into the rotation next year (I'm sure Tony's already losing sleep over it).
I have always seen his as the future closer. He does not have enough stuff to fool hitters as a starter, but he seems to have a nice combo of pitches to do it for an inning or so. I also don't know how his endurance holds up, although his fast ball has nice life to it.
Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!
possibility that big Adam is gonna start tomorrow against the Marlins.. unless Mulder is ready to go. Anybody have a good scouting report on him. His #'s look rediculous right now, and he's got the size...
I can't see him being a good starter, and this is coming from a guy who has been praising Wainwright for about a year and a half now. His third pitch is not well developed and who knows how his endurance is. I have always claimed he will take over for Izzy as the closer in 2 years or so and I am sticking to it.

He's progressed really slowly it seems. He was the main piece the Braves used to acquire JD Drew, and he was already at least in AA ball then. Ugh that makes me think, if he cracks the rotation the Cards woulda netted two starters for a one year rental of Drew. Not that I ever thought Marquis would get it together though...
That really is an interesting trade to look back on. Wainright, Marquis, and Ray King for Drew who ended up a one year rental (although he was great that year)
I'd think you have to give the Braves the short end of the stick at this point though.
