KC is owned by a Billionaire. They have the pocket book, esp given the welfare they receive. They are just plain old cheap.

If money talked then the Twins would have the best players. Their owner has the most money of any single owner, by a lot.

It doesn't really matter if the owner is rich or poor if they are not investing revenue sharing money in the team. The only teams with negative operating income last year was the Red Sox, Yankees, and Marlins. So everyone else could spend money on free agents, but choose not to.

I'll say it again-the Phillies are the worst franchise in the history of sports...all sports, not just baseball. There is no beating them, and no argument can convince me otherwise. Just glance over their history, and prepare to upchuck. Hell, just glance at their lineup changes this season, and dry heave.

Yankees are among the best. Their franchise value is over a billion. They make some awful free agent signings but its all of their other revenue streams that make up for it, unlike other teams. And they are going to make more money in 2009 with the luxury suites in the new stadium.

As long as they have the revenue coming in, they will be able to go out and put a competitive and MARKETABLE team out on the field.

Too bad the guy in KC missed the chance to lock up a fan favorite like Beltran, a few years before his free agency, for the long-term. They'll have another shot soon with the Alex Gordons and Billy Butlers of the world. KC will not be a big market but they have potential to be a mid market team like Cleveland. Maybe they should take a hint and lock up the Butlers and Gordons around age 25 or 26 and build a team around them.

Sort of like how they locked up Sweeney long term and built the team around him? After Berroa' great rookie season they signed him long term as well (through 2009). DeJesus' contract was extended through 2011. All of them share one thing in common. Their agent is not Scott Boras, who does everything possible to keep his young clients from signing long term deals without ever testing free agency. The Royals wanted to lock up Beltran, the same as they wanted to lock up Damon (another of Boras' clients).
