After Dan Miceli put two men on to start the top of the ninth, Tyler Walker got a double play ball and a strikeout against the Red Sox to earn a save Friday night in his Rays debut.
The Rays had already gone through Shawn Camp and Chad Orvella. Miceli did a fine job getting out of a jam created by Camp in the eighth inning, but he didn't have enough left to get through the ninth, resulting in the decision to go to walker. Mike Lowell grounded into a double play and Trot Nixon struck out, giving the Rays a 5-2 win. While this hardly makes Walker the Rays' new closer, it will put him in the mix. We still think he's at least as likely as Miceli to hurt fantasy teams in ERA and WHIP, but AL-only leaguers will want to pick him up anyway.
